Secondary Education

Want to teach students at the middle or high school levels? Teachers in secondary education tend to specialize in a specific subject, such as English, math, science, social studies, physical education or the arts. And the education requirements for teachers depend on whether they work in elementary or secondary education classrooms. Elementary school teachers must earn a Bachelor of Science in Education or a related degree, while secondary education teachers earn a bachelor’s degree in their chosen subject.

At MTSU, undergraduate students seeking a secondary education teaching license earn their degrees in other colleges but complete a minor in the College of Education. For Secondary Education minors, students participate in a carefully sequenced series of courses and learning experiences. The courses include on-campus and field-based learning experiences and conclude with a year of residency.
